Social Event: Excursion

Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex

This excursion is our main attraction with a price of 70€. It includes a 2 hours guided tour through the UNESCO World Heritage site "Zeche Zollverein" close to the city of Essen. The tour combines the two individual tours "Über Kohle und Kumpel: Der Weg der Kohle auf der Zeche" (About coal and cola miners: The way of the coal on the mine, see https://www.zollverein.de/kalender/uber-kohle-und-kumpel-fuehrung) and "Kohlenwäsche mit Ausblick: Führung durch die Kohlenwäsche" (Coal washing with a view: Guided tour of the coal washing, see https://www.zollverein.de/kalender/kohlenwasche-mit-ausblick). Both tours will be conducted in English. 

Also, the total price of 70€ includes a premium 3-course dinner with free drinks in the time period 18-21 pm, which takes place on site at "The Mine" restaurant, see https://www.the-mine.eu/. The menu includes:

  • starter: a creamy tomato soup
  • main course: chicken breast in a mushroom sauce with rosemary potatoes (vegetarian and vegan options available)
  • dessert: Mousse au chocolate
  • drinks: water, Coca Cola, Fanta, Sprite, beer 

For this excursion, participants will be picked up by bus directly at the conference hotel. After the dinner, at 21:15 pm, people will be again picked up by bus at Zeche Zollverein and will be brought back to the conference hotel in Dortmund.

Skywalk and Beer Tasting

For this excursion we will stay quite close to the conference venue and explore the local industrial history of steel and coal in Dortmund. This event includes a guided tour of 2 hours through (and on top of!) a blast furnace, resulting in a panoramic view over Dortmund, see www.skywalk-dortmund.de. The price of 22€ covers the guided tour. Afterwards, participants are invited to stay at the Bergmann brewery (in our opinion Dortmund's best selection of beers) right next to the blast furnace for a beer tasting. Seating indoors and outdoors is accompanied by a food truck (note that the beer consumption in the brewery is not included in the price of the excursion, each participant has to pay for themselves at the brewery).

Stadium Tour

In Dortmund, the largest football stadium in Germany and one of the largest football stadiums in Europe is located. Hence, we are glad to offer you a guided tour for the Signal Iduna Park (former name: Westfalenstadion). This stadium is home of the largest club in the whole Ruhr area, Borussia Dortmund, and is most famous for its "Yellow Wall", the largest standing tribune in Europe. In a guided tour, the participants will have the opportunity to not only see the stadium and stands, but also how the stadium is structured inside. The price of the tour will be 30 €.  We will close this tour with a small gathering, where you can get a taste of a typical German meal, which is Currywurst (sausage with curry), and of course some typical local beer.
